SINGAPORE, SEPTEMBER 11 – The National Youth Council (NYC) and UNFRAMED are partnering to launch a specialised training academy for young social entrepreneurs, in a ground-up initiative to help youths create greater social and environmental impact. This is in light of recent research, where studies show a vibrant but otherwise infantile start-up ecosystem in Singapore.

Singapore is no stranger to the concept of entrepreneurship– in fact, we champion it. Recent studies from the Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship & Philanthropy showed growing public interest in social enterprises in Singapore, accompanied by an increase in the sources of funding and publicity from beneficiaries in recent years. Just last month, the Minister for Trade and Industry, S Iswaran, calls for young Singaporeans to develop an ‘entrepreneurship mindset’.

“When you talk about entrepreneurship, it doesn’t mean that all of us are going to end up starting our own business,” said Mr Iswaran in a TODAY article.  “It’s really more about the mindset, the problem-solving mindset. You are prepared to go out there to try new things. Even if you start something and fail, the learning that you acquire through it, especially in early stages, is something extremely valuable.”

Supported under NYC’s National Youth Fund, UNFRAMED’s training academy will aim to nurture, in  two  years, close to 1,000 aspiring entrepreneurs intending to make the world a better place. Social enterprises, start-ups, social sector organisations, and even young professionals who are interested in embarking on an innovative social cause, have benefitted from this initiative. The programmes held will provide rigorous, all rounded training to turn promising ideas into viable initiatives. NYC is happy to support UNFRAMED to help more youths fulfil their dreams and passions in doing good for the community.

The training academy also  includes practical courses such as Social Innovation, Business Strategy and Financial Sustainability directly taught by seasoned entrepreneurs. Short-term idea validation Bootcamps and  4-month impact Accelerators are also available, to cater to youths with different needs. Young social entrepreneurs will learn directly from industry practitioners hard skills such as digital marketing, user experience design and business modelling, while not forgetting soft skills such as empathy, stakeholder engagement and fundraising. Through the programmes, aspiring entrepreneurs will gain more confidence, and have privileged access to the largest social impact network in Singapore. Our network comprises of large corporations, social sector organisations and government agencies such as NYC, for support and funding. By joining the UNFRAMED community, young entrepreneurial leaders will build up strong foundations for future successes.

For current or aspiring entrepreneurs with specific interests in food sustainability, the first programme under the new training academy: Makanpreneur, is open for application until 17 September 2017.
